UFC 55: Fury Summary

UFC 55: Fury took place on October 7, 2005 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

This event as a whole was great; it was surely a crowd pleaser!
 

Preliminary card

• Light Heavyweight bout:  Alessio Sakara vs.  Ron Faircloth

This bout ended in No Contest at :10 in round two after Sakara was unintentionally kicked in the groin.

Sakara dominated the fight the whole first round, with a good display of domination on the ground and standing up. However, right as the second went underway, Faircloth accidentally kicked Sakara right in the nuts (incredibly hard) and Sakara was unable to continue. Sakara may have ruptured a testicle; he was dry heaving and painfully moaning after he instantly collapsed right after the kick.

• Heavyweight bout:  Márcio Cruz vs.  Keigo Kunihara

Cruz wins by submission (rear naked choke) at 1:02 of round two.

This was a pretty goofy fight, as both men were horrible standing up. Kunihara Judo tossed Cruz many times in the first round. In the second round, he again took Cruz down, but Cruz managed to get to his feet and take Kunihara's back, where he slipped on the choke while sticking his tongue out to the cameras.

• Middleweight bout:  Jorge Rivera vs.  Dennis Hallman

Rivera wins by unanimous decision. The bout, although preliminary, was aired on the broadcast.

Hallman took the striking specialist to the ground right out of the gates, but a much improved Rivera controlled him nicely and even rolled him and got on top. Hallman gassed very quickly and Rivera's stand out muy-thia weathered him immensely. By the start of the second round Hallman's stamina was already drained and Rivera continually beat on him till the end of the fight.

• Welterweight bout:  Joe Riggs vs.  Chris Lytle

Riggs wins by technical knockout (doctor stoppage) at 2:00 of round two.

Riggs won this fight on the ground, where he landed some incredibly hard ground and pound, throwing wild haymakers that seemed to always connect with Lytle's chin. In the second round, Riggs took Lytle down, where he was rolled and Lytle began to unleash his own powerful strikes. When Lytle come down with a blow, his forehead absorbed Riggs' left elbow and split open, which led to a ref stoppage and ended the fight.

• Light Heavyweight bout:  Renato Sobral vs  Chael Sonnen

Sobral wins by submission (triangle choke) at 1:20 of round two.

This was an exiting fight, as both men displayed nice all around game. Sonnen looked to have the edge and was dealing the majority of the damaged to a more fatigued Sobral, but got caught in a Triangle choke that forced him to tap.

• Light Heavyweight bout:  Forrest Griffin vs.  Elvis Sinosic

Griffin wins by technical knockout (strikes) at 3:30 of round one.

Griffin got to do what he loves best, a brawl. Sinosic was winning the stand up clashes, rocking Griffin on more than one occasion. Griffin went from techinical striking to barbaric striking and started pressuring Sinosic ravaging until he managed to catch Sinosic with a left hook that dropped him (Griffin pounced and finished him quickly)

• Heavyweight bout:  Branden Lee Hinkle vs.  Sean Gannon

Hinkle wins by technical knockout (strikes) at 4:14 of round one.

Lee Hinkle dominated the whole fight, actively taking full mount and trying to get a kimura against the internet famous Gannon (who street brawled with Kimbo Silce). The numerous kimuras were abandoned and Lee Hinkle settled on relentless elbows that were all unguarded to Gannons soon bloodied face, until the ref stepped in.

• Heavyweight Championship bout:  Andrei Arlovski (ic) vs.  Paul Buentello

Arlovski wins by knockout at :15 of round one.

Both men clashed quickly, and Arlovski landed a huge right as he was shooting down on Buentello that knocked him out cold. Nobody but John McCarthy realized he was out, as he fell onto Arlovski's back, looking like he was trying to sprawl. On the replay it was clear, however.
